Karen is Professorial Research Fellow on the project BrExpats: freedom of movement, citizenship and Brexit in the lives of Britons resident in the European Union funded by the UK in a Changing EU. This innovative sociological study questions what Brexit means for Britons resident in other European Union member states.
Karen is also Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Loughborough Universityand a freelance qualitative research trainer. Author of: Lifestyle Migration and Colonial Traces in Malaysia and Panama (with M. Benson, 2018; International Migration and Social Theory (2012); Ethnographic Methods (2012); Key Concepts in Ethnography (2009); Lifestyle Migration (edited volume with Michaela Benson, 2009); and The British on the Costa del Sol (2000).
Xinran Y. Lehto is a professor at the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Purdue University. She is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research, and serves on the editorial board of five other international academic journals. She is currently the president of the International Tourism Studies Association. Prior to her academic appointments, Dr. Lehto worked in the travel and tourism industry as a marketing officer for China National Tourism Administration and a planning executive for Chan Brothers Travel, Singapore.
Dr. Lehto is well published. She has over 100 research publications in refereed international journals including the top rated Annals of Tourism Research, Tourism Management and Journal of Travel Research. Dr. Lehto is the recipient of multiple best paper awards from various international conferences and Article of the Year awards from two refereed journals.
Dr. Lehto’s research expertise area is tourism marketing. Her research addresses how destinations can effectively market experience-based vacation products to unique segments such as family travelers. Much of her work is concerned with developing understanding of how tourists interact with a destination through leisure and hospitality experiences, what outcomes and benefits tourism provides, and how personal, interpersonal and cultural factors influence destination experience design, marketing practices, and visitor satisfaction.
Dr. Lehto emphasizes the ramifications of her research to the travel and tourism industry. She disseminates her research in a wide variety of forums including international conferences and colloquia, refereed journal articles, technical reports, and public presentations. She has worked closely with community agencies to evaluate and develop programs and strategies related to tourism and leisure services.
CALL FOR PAPERS for the Gran Canaria Spring Symposium on Challenges in Tourism Development, Gran Canaria SSTD 2019, with the sponsorship of the Gran Canaria Tourism Board, June 6th and 7th 2019.
The annual Tourism Tides Symposium will be held during the 6th and 7th of June in Gran Canaria, (Canary Islands, Spain). The topic this year will focus on “Digital Nomads, Lifestyle Migration and Residential Tourism". The symposium provides an opportunity for tourism researchers from all over the world to exchange scientific ideas and results and discuss new and emerging directions in research and practice in the field. Theoretical or applied research contributions in the form of structured abstracts are welcome.
The symposium is aimed at getting together several researchers from different disciplines and will bring the opportunity to exchange our views on new and old challenges in Tourism Development. If you want to enjoy this opportunity to share your work and know the work of your colleagues, the call for abstracts is now open.
We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Xinran Letho from the University of Purdue (Indiana) will be one of our keynote speakers at the IV Gran Canaria SSTD 2019.

All abstracts will be subject to a double-blind peer review process. Selected academic contributions addressing one or more of the sub-themes of the symposium will be presented during plenary and parallel sessions. Please refer to the ‘Submission guidelines’ document as a style guide for standards to follow in the preparation of your extended abstract. Abstracts must be uploaded to the online submission and reviewing email address: (theme: Abstract Gran Canaria SSTD 2019).
- Early bird registration fee: 80€ until May 10th.
- Late registration fee: 100€
- Master and PhD students are welcome: reduced-fare 60€ until May 10th
The seminar fee includes participation in the seminar, seminar programme, coffee break, lunch, dinner and a recreational activity.
Please, in order to formally register for the conference, you should make the payment of the registration before May 10th.
The extended abstract will have: keys words, the purpose of the study, methodology, findings, originality, research limitations and practical implications in no more than 500 words.
The scope of Gran Canaria SSTD 2019 encompasses:
a) Tourism and Sustainable Economic Development: competitiveness, innovation and market research; theoretical, methodological and practical developments; tourism and quality of life research (theories, practices, applications, and challenges).
b) Consumer Behaviour in Tourism: emerging issues for consumer behaviour research and practice; ensuring validity in tourism consumer behaviour studies and in hospitality research; issues of measurement and methodology.
c) Future directions for tourism demand: future tourism demand; demographic, behavioural and social changes; challenges for marketers and economists.
d) Economic Perspectives on Tourism and Transport.
