The TIDES Institute was established under the 27/2010 Decree of March 11th. The formal proposal for its creation was presented in 2008 by a group of research-teaching staff at the ULPGC who were aware of the key role that research in tourism should represent in the progress and welfare of our society, represented and lead by the Professor of Applied Economics, Dr. Carmelo Javier León González, Director of the UNESCO Chair of Sustainable Tourism Planning of the ULPGC and Director of the research group ECOMAS.

This proposal was endorsed by a large group of lecturers from the ULPGC, after a First PromoTides Meeting carried out in October 2009, and was further endorsed by researchers with plenty of experience in tourism, who belong to different knowledge areas. Overseas lecturers of recognised prestige also participate as collaborating members.

The TIDES Institute has the support of the main Public Administrations in the Canary Islands which are responsible for Tourism, Town Halls and firms, as well as the support of top international centres on worldwide tourism research.
